Repair & care

Emphasising the value of cloth and the manufacturing behind it, at the core of the Sarah Johnson brand is a vision for each garment to be kept for years, perhaps even a lifetime.

For this, it takes ongoing care and sometimes, affectionate repair. Not only strengthening the garment’s structure, but also the personal connection we have to the piece itself, we have made suggestions as to how to care for your Sarah Johnson item below.

Care: washing

Washing is one of the harshest things we do to our clothes. To help prolong the life of your garments we suggest washing at 30 degrees with a gentle detergent before then leaving them to air dry outside or in a warm spot in your home, away from direct sunlight.

On each garment page within the design description, you will find notes on how to wash, dry and iron according to individual recommendations which take fabric and finish into account. For the pieces dyed using indigo, washing individually will reduce the chance of colour being transferred to other belongings. As natural indigo pigment is antimicrobial (prevents bacteria and odours) we encourage spot checking and airing to best maintain the intensity of the colour.

For outerwear treated with a natural oil finish, gently wiping any stains with a cloth will preserve the coating and also helps to reduce the need for reapplication.

Repair: in-house or at home

I believe that we have lost our connection to what we choose to wear as long term companions throughout our lives. To help re-establish this, I am available to patch your Sarah Johnson garment, re-dip it in the dye bath to give it another layer of blue, or replace a button. I love hearing the stories each garment carries and find both visible and statement repair adds character that will only make your belonging that much more special.

Allowing your clothes to grow with you, in celebration of age, I want to encourage that we do not discard something because it is old, but rather to re-learn that old is a value and a gift.

I offer an in-house repair service. Please get in contact with me under the subject of ‘Sarah Johnson Repairs’ and we can schedule a casual chat as to what is required and an estimate price: hello@bysarahjohnson.co.uk.

At this time I only offer this service for Sarah Johnson pieces.
